Who
We Are
The Lane County Darfur Coalition works to end the genocide in Darfur...
We
are a coalition of community members, college and high school students.
Since November, 2005 we have worked to increase the awareness in
our community about the genocide in Darfur. Our desire to relieve
the suffering of innocent people in Darfur and in Chad has led us
to send direct humanitarian aid to refugee camps in these countries.
At the same time, we continually press our leaders to use their
power to effect a settlement to the conflict that will bring peace
to the area. Although we vary in age and background, we share a
deep commitment to ending the genocide. Please join us if you, too,
can no longer remain silent and inactive while the slaughter continues
in Darfur.
Our Activities
The Lane County Darfur Coalition is made up of a variety of committees, as well as general membership. Our Steering Committee
is responsible for planning activities and events, and for developing informational materials. The Action Committee staffs
information tables and performs other advocacy and informational/educational activities. The Humanitarian Aid Committee carries
out a variety of projects to raise money for people living in refugee camps in Darfur and Chad.
Together, we:
- Provided 5,000 school kits and many blankets to
children and adults living in refugee camps in
Darfur
- Developed and continue to sell notecards with
photos of Darfur to raise money for humanitarian
efforts
- Meet with congress people
- Hold informational meetings at various public
locations (library, churches, schools and the
University of Oregon)
- Hold viewings of informational videos, such as
Darfur Diaries
- Give presentations at venues such as the UO
Genocide Conference, Amnesty International
Conference, and various radio interviews
- Write letters to the Editor of local newspapers,
and create and distribute Darfur Fact Sheets
